Monoterpenes are built from two isoprene units. There are about 2000 variations of monoterpenes. You can find these in Peppermint, Juniper Berry, Frankincense, Spruce, Pine, Cypress etc. An interesting function of monoterpenes is that they stimulate apoptosis (death of the cell) in cells with incorrect DNA coding (which can cause disease such as cancer).

Sesquiterpenes are built from three isoprene units. There are more than 10,000 different sesquiterpenes. You can find them in Cedarwood, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Black Pepper, Patchouli, Myrrh, Ginger and also Frankincense. They transport oxygen molecules in cells. Sesquiterpenes can inhibit angiogenesis (cell growth) and also stimulate apoptosis by affecting cell DNA.

Phenylpropanoids are built from one isoprene unit (in a ring structure). There are dozens of different variations of Phenylpropanoids. You can find them in Clove, Cassia, Basil, Cinnamon, Oregano, Anise and Peppermint. They create a hostile environment for viruses and bacteria, but their most important function is that they can free the receptors of cells. With blocked receptors, a cell cannot communicate and disease can arise.

The combination of Monoterpenes, Sesquiterpenes and Phenylpropanoids thus works in three ways:
- cleaning of receptors resulting in better cell communication through better transfer of hormones, peptides, neurotransmitters, steroids and other intracellular molecules (Ayaz et al, 2017)
- influence the DNA (by influencing the mRNA expression, among other things) so that in the future the DNA repair process in the cell is stimulated (Plant and Stephens 2015)
- elimination of cells with faulty DNA (Apotosis) (Chen et al 2011, Jia et al 2013)

Some essential oils contain all three components mentioned above and have excellent healing qualities provided they are used correctly. You could say that science proves that essential oils can influence cellular memory.

Does it make a difference whether I inhale, use topically or ingest an oil?
Essential oils almost always end up in the blood, whether they are applied to the skin as a liquid, taken internally or when steam is inhaled.

Essential oils that are inhaled influence the limbic system of the brain via the olfactory system. Because an oil is usually also inhaled during massage, this is also the case with topical use.

Here is what to take if you take nothing else! Everything hinges on these three! Like Shannon Perkins describes the dirty pond.... drop the oil into it and it will clean around the one spot, but drop the oil into a pond that has been cleaned up with these three it will spread and work much more efficiently throughout the whole pond!
